    Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Posted on September 21, 2010 @ 10:28 am | File under : health by sweetness

Losing an aunt to breast cancer last year made us (the ladies especially) keenly aware of the killer disease. It was a tragic experience to all of us (whose isn’t?), all the more shocking because it was pretty quick. In a matter of weeks, we lost her. All the while we were told she was suffering from osteoporosis. It was only during her final 3 weeks that we learned it was breast cancer and that it was already in it’s 4th stage. It was very difficult to accept. There weren’t any signs and even the doctors who treated her didn’t see the cancer until it was so late. It made us wonder why the test results didn’t detect the cancer early on. It took us a while to recover from that tragic experience. My aunt was like a second mom to my husband.

Next month is breast cancer awareness month and although I don’t wear a pink ribbon, I support those fundraising products for businesses. I believe that their cause would help a lot of women (even men) suffering from the dreaded disease. I even encourage family and friends to buy Breast Cancer Awareness merchandise. It’s great to know that in my own little way, I am able to help. In the article Pink Ribbons and Breast Cancer Awareness: A Useless Marketing Gimmick, there is a discussion about the improvements that have been realized in the last several years in survival rates and early detection programs, which has been a major contributor to saving lives. But it also raises the idea that some people see it as a gimmick, nothing more. I think whatever we can do to fight this disease is good, and so the pink ribbons have had a positive effect, but I also wonder about what we can do to prevent the disease in the first place?

    Quick Fix for Sour Strawberries

Posted on September 16, 2010 @ 3:27 am | File under : cooking and baking fixes by sweetness

Sometimes you can’t avoid to get sour berries from the market.  When you’re stuck with them, I read that sprinkling the fruits with 1 tablespoon sugar and a squeeze of lemon juice will do the job.  After putting the sugar and lemon juice, let it sit for 30 minutes.  Sugar draws out the berries’ flavorful juices while lemon juice adds acidity for an optimal sweet-tart balance.

    Excellent Taste

My son’s room is now ready for him. Over the weekend, we took him to the mall to buy the things he want in it. He wanted himself to decorate the room. He knows what he wants and has an idea of how he wants his room to look. He chose modern furniture and I must admit htat he has excellent taste. All his stuff will be delivered on Saturday and his already so excited about it. I can’t wait to see how his room will look after he’s done decorating it.

    Hubby’s Dilemma

Posted on @ 2:06 am | File under : hair care by sweetness

Hubby’s crowning glory is starting to go. His once luscious hair is thinning. He would check his pillow every morning to see how much hair he lost the previous day. He’d even check how wider his forehead had become. He’s trying out different products for hair loss to somehow slow down the balding process or to even rejuvenate his scalp. He’s only in his mid-forties, to young to lose all his hair. So far, his efforts look promising.
