  • Troubled Youths

Posted on August 31, 2010 @ 11:41 am | File under : health and fitness, social concerns by sweetness

My husband has been involved in a program sponsoring rehabilitation for troubled youths. He and his friends started this after one of their buddies succumbed to substance abuse. The would work with social workers and try to enlist these kid in programs given by reputable detox centers. After the youths finish their programs, a support group sees to it that they remain clean so can once again be part of society.

Substance abuse in on the rise. Opiate addiction is one of the more common ones because of its availability and cost. Nipping the addiction in the bud is what they try to do. That is the ideal situation but rarely happens. There detox centers and there are detox centers. A good center can help rehabilitate a patient in a matter of days without further antagonizing the patient.  After treatment support is imperative to prevent a relapse. I’ve seen how effective this is in one of the subjects my husband brought home. Psychological and emotional support is very important. A detox center shouldn’t be seen as a mere drop off point, it is to be viewed as place of hope. This is why not all detox centers are the same.

Prudence has allowed these troubled youths to go back to the mainstream. Every year, my husband’s group holds a get-together with those they have helped. Some even join and try to help others who needs help. Addiction is all around us. It is not just a family problem, it is a social problem.

    Handy Driving Aid

I tend to lose my way around unfamiliar towns. This happens often when I try out new places to eat. I do have a map on hand but it’s hard to pull over just to check where I am. I always end up calling my husband to ask for directions. Tired of me bugging him at the wrong time, he had a Garmin GPS installed in my car. It was sweet of him to do this but I know he had other motives for it. Now I don’t have to get in his with his busy schedule.

    Baking Tip (9)

I’ve read this little secret somewhere but I still have not tried it, nevertheless, I’d like to share it with all of you.

If you want to cut calories from your favorite cake, use a 12 oz. can of cola in place of the oil, eggs and water when preparing a packaged chocolate cake mix.  Blend for 2 minutes, then bake as directed on the box.  The sugary liquid acts as a binding agent, clumping the flour and sugar together, while the carbonation ensures the sweet treat comes out moist and fluffy – and with 75 percent less fat.  The article says, you can also try different flavor combinations like lemon cake mix with lemon lime soda.

    Hubby’s Hobby

Posted on August 27, 2010 @ 8:54 am | File under : hobby by sweetness

My husband loves to smoke a good cigar. One of his pastime is going to his favorite cigar bar with his friends to chat and smoke their favorite cigars. Even after a round of golf, he would smoke his favorite brand. He loves to try out new flavors but always goes back to his favorite smoke. Rare as it may be, he never runs out of his favorite brand. Smoking a good cigar is just one of Hubby’s many hobbies.
